Why do the verse numbers in a KJV Bible not always match those in the NIV and NASB Bibles?
Some KJV verses don’t appear at all in other Bibles. And vice versa. Why is this?
Actually, the three that you mention the King James Version (KJV), the New International Version and the New American Standard Bible – all use the same verse/chapter division (many others do not use that division).
What scholars have discovered in the 400 years since the KJV is that older manuscripts do not include many of the verses that were found in the source used for the KJV. In other words, the source text for the KJV included unauthentic additions made centuries after the authors must have been dead.
Because the KJV translators had no way of knowing that these unauthentic additions were present, they are included in the KJV (and in most or all other bibles of the period as well).
Now that scholars have verified that some of the passages found in the KJV are unauthentic additions to the text, they put those unauthentic additions into the footnotes – often “removing” entire verse, at other times “removing” only parts of verses.
The important point is: the modern translations are not *really* “removing” passages: instead, they are not including passages that never existed in the original texts.
You will find that nearly all of these “additions” are what is known as a “gloss” – an explanation added into the text from another Scripture. So, nearly all of the unauthentic additions present in the KJV and other very old bibles have no effect whatsoever on Christian doctrine. (I would say that *none* of them affect Christian doctrine.)
