It has a board and pieces in front of you to work in the examples. Learn chess notation! It is a way to record the movements of a chess game. You can not study the game, unless you know this information. Fortunately, is easy to learn. If I had to recommend a book for an absolute beginner would probably be "a World Chess Champion Guide" by Susan Polgar Polgar. Susan is one of the best players in the world today (although officially retired from the competition), who won four Women's World Championships. It is the second strongest player of all time (her younger sister, Judit Polgar is the strongest player in history). Polgar is a great teacher, and this particular book will teach you all you need to know to get started. The book also contains sections on strategy and tactics. All the best to you!
