Fully Restored

why are some museum objects fully restored and others are left in an uncompleted state?
Good question! There are myriad reasons why a museum may decide to restore one object and not another. Often it has to do with cost. While some museums have in-house conservators many do not, so they have to pay either a freelance conservator or a conservation company to do the work. If there are many objects in need of repair, the museum has to prioritize which objects need help the most. Or the museum may consider which objects are most popular or important and should be shown in their best condition, versus another artifact that may be in terrible shape but isn’t a particularly great object. For example, if a famous Picasso painting at MOMA has a few chips of paint coming off, chances are that painting will be restored before a damaged print that is rarely on display and is by a much less popular artist.
Other reasons why a work might not be restored include …
- the restoration procedure may not be adequate and could even damage the work further (in the case of extremely fragile objects)
- the conservation to an original state presents an appearance that is not what most museum viewers expect — see the link below about painted Greek sculpture.
- the object is simply beyond repair but still worth showing as an example
- sometimes objects that are not restored actually tell us more about a piece than if they were “perfect” — for example you might be able to see how a sculpture is constructed by seeing its many pieces and insides, which you wouldn’t see if the artwork was restored.
