2002 VW Jetta GLS auto shifting problems?
I recently bought a auto 2002 VW Jetta GLS. Its in great condition, 57k miles, and runs smooth.
Recently I have noticed while driving it has been violently shifting between gears (1-2-3).
It almost scares me how hard it is shifting. The entire car jerks forward and sometimes the wheels squeel.
Would a tranny flush fix the problem?
Or what would you suggest?
The transmission has had a history of hard shifting, but mainly in the 1-2 shift and a delayed engagement issue. From what you describe, the transmission needs to be looked at by either a VW specialist or a dealership to determine the cause. I would suggest having the software updates checked in the computer, making sure all the updates to transmission shift control have been done; also the fluid level and condition checked. VW does NOT recommend flushing the transmission; this can blow the internal seals and they probably don’t have the correct transmission fluid besides …. I’ve seen to many transmission failures over the years because the wrong fluid and wrong proceedure was done on these cars. You need someone who has the correct VAG or other scanner with the correct software and knows the proceedure for checking/draining/refilling the transmission. It won’t be cheap: the fluid sells upwards to 20.00 per quart, plus at least .75 of an hour of labour at the posted rate, though I have heard some shops are charging up to 1.5 hours of labour to drain/refill the transmission.
