Does being on a 40 man roster count as major league service?
Even if the player is playing in the minor leagues? For example, John Doe plays 6 years in the minors but is added to the 40 man roster after 3 seasons. After his sixth year in the minors, he plays 3 years in the majors (moved to 25 man roster). By this time, he has been on the 40 man roster for 6 years. Is he a free agent or does he have to play 3 more years since the first 3 years of being on the 40 man roster does not count as major league service?
No. Major League service is only for guys on the 25 man roster.
