Perfect Carfax
Can someone explain Carfax Reports to me?
My fiance is looking to purchased a used car, and she thinks she’s found the perfect one but we wanted to do some research on it first. I’m looking into how Carfaxes work, and to be honest it doesn’t make any sense to me. It says you can order 1 Carfax report or 5 Carfax reports, and this particular car has 16 reports attached to it.
We primarily want to see the history because we want to see if the timing belt has been replaced, because we know with these particular cars if it isn’t replaced around 100k miles it could be bad news. So here is what I don’t get… I could pay almost 50 dollars to see only 5 of these 16 reports, and be unlucky enough to NOT have the timing belt (if done at all) on those 5 reports sent to me?
I am not even sure if that’s how it works. I just want one list of the car’s complete history.. but I’m not about to shell out several hundred dollars for it.
You got it all wrong.
With carfax it’s one report per vehicle. On that one report it will have 16 different incidents listed. They provide a 5 report option if you are out searching for a used car and you haven’t found the right one yet. This way you can run multiple reports for a discount.
But, save your money. Carfax will not tell you if the timing belt has been replaced. Repairs and routine maintenance isn’t generally reported to Carfax. You would have to ask the seller for proof that is was replaced by providing you with a repair order for the job. If they can’t produce the repair order you have to assume that is has not been replaced. Even if your mechanic tore down the front end of the engine to look at the timing belt, unless it was so worn out that is was ready to break at any time you couldn’t tell a 6 month old belt from a 6 year old belt.
